A SCHOOL sports day descended into chaos when three of its young athletes were carried away by ambulances.

Crowds of parents and siblings watched in horror as three youngsters were taken to hospital at Hopewell School’s sports day on Wednesday.

One child suffered a fractured wrist after tripping in the relay race while two others were injured in the obstacle event.

Kent County Council education spokesman Sarah Howe said: "It wasn’t to do with the heat, they were sitting in the shade and tripped on the track."
