A campaign to encourage commuters to and from Ashford International Station to Go Greener was launched on Monday.

The Kent County Council scheme involves offering commuters incentives to leave their cars at home and use eco-friendlier ways to get to the station.

According to the KCC, cyclists can claim a free breakfast during the morning peak period, while other commuters stand the chance to win prizes if they sign up for a personal travel plan.

Names will be entered into a free prize draw to win a folding bicycle, a 13-week Stagecoach Megarider Gold ticket which entitles the owner to use all Stagecoach services in the Ashford area.

The event marked the launch of the Ashford Station Travel Plan, one of 31 similar projects nationwide championed by the Association for Train Operating Companies.

Passengers are invited to become a travel plan partner by filling in a form at the station or online at www.kentjourneyshare.com.

David Hall, Kent Highway Services head of transport and development said: "Ashford commuters are already making a huge contribution to reducing congestion by travelling by train.

"They can do even more by making their journey to the station in a greener way.

"Recent investments have made alternatives to the car practical, affordable and attractive. I would urge everyone to sign up for a Personal Travel Plan if only to appreciate what is on offer."
