A Kent MP and key ally of Theresa May says Parliament should choose from a full range of options if the Brexit deal proposed by the Prime Minister is rejected in a vote.
Ashford MP Damian Green, a prominent “remainer”, said that even a ‘no deal’ should be among the alternatives MPs should consider next year if there is no agreement over what is on offer.
“If the deal falls I think we just need the full range of options put before Parliament, including Norway, Canada, a second referendum, a ‘No Deal’ - all of which I think are worse than the current deal. So I think it would then be a question of choosing between which is the least bad on offer.”
His comments come as minister Amber Rudd urged MPs to forge a consensus over Brexit.
She said MPs across the political divide should "abandon outrage" and attempt to "forge a consensus" over Brexit.
Mr Green said he was confident that the assurances being sought by Theresa May from EU leaders would be provided.
“It is in the interests of both sides; clearly it is in our interests... and particularly in Kent that we do not crash out with no deal but it is also in the interest of European countries too."
Asked about the possible impact on Kent of a ‘no deal’ scenario he said: “The obvious one is that if there is any disruption on the Dover-Calais route, which is so sensitive to that disruption, we could see the type of Chaos that we saw on the roads in 2015 possibly for longer and that just makes daily life miserable for so many people. I am determined that shouldn't happen.”
Kent MPs are divided on the deal, with marginally more saying they cannot support it in its current form.
MPs will vote on the deal in the New Year.
