A PR blunder appeared to show Ashford Borough Council endorsing a Facebook group which has branded Highways England incompetent.
The council's official social media page was promoting a website set up by Highways England to inform motorists with updates of the M20 junction 10a scheme.
Instead of tagging in the official Highways England page, a member of staff tagged in the wrong page named Highways England Incompetence.
The post said: "Highways England Incompetence have released a detailed report on the progress of J10a and the timeline of work that's expected to take place."
The post was live on the site for around 25 minutes before it was edited after commenters pointed out the error.
A comment posted by the council shortly after it was amended added: "Thanks all - we definitely tagged the right account but it keeps linking to this one when the posts go live, not intentional at all."
The post was ended with a 'winky' face.
The council's communications and marketing manager, Dean Spurrell, said: "It was an error, nothing further to add."
A spokesman for Highways England said: "“We weren’t aware of the post, but have been reassured by our partners at Ashford Borough Council that this was a genuine mistake.
"We will continue to work closely with everyone as the scheme rolls out."
