Overgrown grass and weeds have so angered Ashford’s Deputy Mayor John Holland that he embarked on a bit of DIY.

He wielded his shears to cut back the 2ft high vegetation near the junction of The Limes, where he lives, and Kingsnorth Road in South Ashford.

Cllr Holland was concerned about the view of drivers approaching Millbank Road being obstructed.

He said: “I have reported this twice to Kent Highways and foresee an accident to either vehicles or pedestrians.

“Since they have been informed I assume they have a duty to attend. I don’t care if the county council is embarrased or what problems they have, something had to be done”.

County council spokesman Phil Scrivener said that Kent Highways liaison officer for Ashford Jennie Wickenden was pursuing the matter with the grass cutting contractor.

He said: “The council is investigating the land ownership before the grass will be cut.”

Cllr Holland added: “This is by no means the only area of overgrown grass that needs cutting back.

“I have been inundated with complaints from my ward and I know other councillors have been getting moans from residents. My actions were to make a point that action has to be taken.”
