This is the scene in Simone Weil Avenue when a man hit by a car was airlifted to hospital on Saturday.

Hundreds of motorists were trapped on the Warren Retail Park after the man was struck at the traffic lights outside the entrance to the park.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and both carriageways were closed to allow the air ambulance to land.

As paramedics battled to save the man’s life, a blue screen was out up round the casualty. They were seen carrying out CPR on him.

One eyewitness, thought to be a Sainsbury’s worker, who would not give his name, said: “I saw it happen.
“The man was on the crossing and was hit by the car then he hit a lampost.”

Customers of Family Bargains were among those caught up in the drama.

Store manager Valle Zaragoza said one of her employees had heard the screech of car brakes. “The air ambulance landed right outside our shop and people were watching what was happening,” she said. “It was a very bad situation.

“Sainsbury’s car park was absolutely stuck. No one could get in or out for at least an hour.”

The female driver of the car was uninjured.
