D-day for Ashford Town

Ashford Town can expect no favours from Kent rivals Chatham on Saturday.

The Nuts & Bolts were unable to secure their Ryman League, Division 1 South status with a 3-1 home defeat against Worthing on Wednesday leaving them facing a make-or-break final day showdown with Chatham.

Walton Casuals will be hoping Ashford slip up in their final two games and a win for them on Saturday at Leatherhead could see them survive and Ashford go down.

It’s a precarious position for Steve Lovell’s side to be in and he puts much of this season’s problems down to a catalogue of injuries.

He said: "We knew this year would be a season for survival but we didn’t expect it to go down to the last week of the season.

"We just need one win to be certain. We don’t want to be relying on Leatherhead – we just want to do it ourselves. It’s just a matter of getting done this season, stuffing this one under the mat and starting again.

"I can’t criticise the players. They’ve given me everything but it’s been a nightmare because of injuries.

"People say it’s an excuse but it’s not. We’ve lost goalkeepers, centre-halves, midfielders and forwards and all key players and they haven’t been short-term injuries either.

"At our level, with only small squads, we rely on seven or eight players and when you’re missing four or five, it’s a major blow. We just need to get through this weekend, survive and build on what we’ve got."
