A family have told how they tried to help an elderly man who died in his car from a heart attack.

Lee and Amanda Rowlands from Chartfields watched in horror as the man in his 80s swerved across the road and slumped to a halt near the Tesco Express on the Mace Lane junction with Mill Court, Ashford.

The couple, with her uncle Durgain Johnson, 54, from Shadoxhurst, had been to the nearby doctor’s surgery to collect a prescription.

The man who died had also been on a doctor's visit and they followed him from the car park.

After the car stopped Mr Rowlands, 40, and Mr Johnson raced to the vehicle while his wife went to get a doctor.

Mrs Rowlands, said: “Lee was talking to the man who said he had stomach and chest pains.

“He took his seat belt off and unbuttoned his shirt before the doctor arrived but he slumped and died on my husband”.

Police confirmed that the man had died of a heart attack so no inquest would be held and they would not be releasing his name.

Mrs Rowlands, said: “We just want his family to know that he was not alone when he passed on as he had been speaking to my husband.”
