A 'miracle' dog has come back from the brink of being put down after running into a fence.

Skye the Saluki whippet staged an amazing recovery after being left limp and lifeless following the incident near Ashford.

The one-year-old, who belongs to the Smith family, had been out for a walk with owner Danny and some of his friends in Hothfield when she ran off into the dark.

Seconds later, the 24-year-old found her lying lifeless having collided with a fence at full speed.

Mr Smith's mum Lisa recounted the horrifying moment her son walked through the door carrying their beloved pooch.

"He must have carried her more than a mile back, and came in with her completely lifeless," she said.

"We rushed her to the 24-hour emergency vets and they said they would have to keep her in overnight.

"We were ringing them every few hours but there was no change. We really started fearing the worst."

After another full day under observation with no improvement, the vets contacted Mrs Smith to say they suspected Skye had a broken or fractured neck.

"They told me that I either had the choice of paying for an MRI scan and potentially an operation, which would cost up to £10,000," she explained.

"We don't have that kind of money, and the only other choice was to have her put down – that was seemingly the only choice we had, she was just lying there high on drugs that the vet gave her."

'We never knew exactly what had happened to her...'

The following day, the family made the decision to bring their cherished pet home to allow the whole family – including Mrs Smith's granddaughter – to say goodbye.

However, after an hour at home, Skye stood up for the first time in three days.

Within three hours, she had taken her first, wobbly, steps.

"We took her straight over to another vets to get an opinion, and they said that it obviously wasn't a broken neck now she had stood up, and that we definitely should not put her down.

"In the end, we never knew exactly what had happened to her. We were wondering if the fence she hit was electrified and it shocked her – it was so dark my son couldn't see.

"After about a week of being pampered and on medication, she was back to running around like a lunatic!"

Skye has now fully recovered and is running around as normal, less than two weeks after being injured.
