Ashford's men (blue and red) lost 3-2 at home to Havant 2nds in their opening league fixture

Ashford men’s 1st team suffered a double defeat at the weekend.

On Saturday, they lost 3-2 at home to Havant 2nds in their opening South Premier League Division 2 game of the season.

Ashford went ahead when Rob Playford finished off a short corner routine, only for Havant to equalise almost immediately after the home defence failed to clear an innocuous-looking ball into the ‘D’.

Ashford keeper Keir Starley ensured that the score stayed 1-1 at half-time by turning a shot around the post just before the break.

Ashford again took the lead in the second half through new boy Adam Fox, who took his half chance superbly after being set up by Andy Hill.

Havant responded with an equaliser from a short corner and Ashford then had three players sin-binned in the closing stages, allowing the visitors to snatch the winner.

One consolation for Ashford was James Spain’s performance in midfield.

On Sunday, Ashford were knocked out of the English HA Cup in the first round when they went down 5-1 at home to the University of Cambridge.

Ashford continue their league campaign on Saturday away to West Hampstead, who were 4-1 winners at Henley on the opening day.

Ashford Ladies made it seven points from their opening three games in the Kent Premier Division with Saturday’s 3-1 home win over Old Bordenians.

They started strongly and were rewarded with a goal from Kate Reed.

Soon after, midfielder Charlotte Kite burst past several players before putting away the second.

But the home side then sat back and allowed Old Bords to reduce the deficit before the break. Ashford needed to produce some solid defending in the second half before a clearance by Becky Thomas found Karina Greensmith, who fired home their third goal.

Ashford are at home to Sevenoaks 3As on Saturday (pushback 10am).
