Dramatic photos show the devastating aftermath of a crash that left a lorry on its side in Ashford.

Police were forced to close the A20 in both directions following the smash, which involved a Travis Perkins truck and Volkswagen Tiguan car.

The VW driver, believed to be a man in his 50s, was taken to the William Harvey Hospital with head and lower leg injuries.

The accident happened just after 9am at the entrance to the Mersham Le Hatch Business Village near the Blue and White cafe.

Paula Tozer, who was taking her daughter to college at the time, was caught up in the incident.

"There was a VW Tiguan involved and a flatbed lorry on its side," she said.

"There was lots of debris on the floor, and I could see a lorry up the road on its side.

"I ran up the road and saw the car, and it looked terrible.

"There were skid marks in the road and a man was lying on the pavement - he had somehow managed to get himself out of the lorry."

Fire crews were forced to cut the VW driver out of his car before he was taken to hospital.

Crews removed the door and roof of the car to release the man, who was placed on a spinal long board and passed into the care of the ambulance service.

Ambulance crews also took the driver of the lorry to hospital for precautionary checks, but both drivers were conscious at the scene.

A police spokesman said officers were called just after 9am, but no serious injuries were reported.

Three fire engines were sent to the accident, as well as two ambulances and a paramedic car.

Mrs Tozer added: "The car had spun around in the opposite direction to which it was travelling, and the driver was trapped in it.

"The front windscreen was smashed and the car door took the impact.

"His car door was so smashed in, so they had to cut the roof off instead.

"The road was blocked and it obviously caused chaos, but fortunately the police said that they were going to be OK."

The air ambulance was also called to the scene and landed on the Mersham Le Hatch Cricket Club pitch.

Drivers have been warned to expect delays in the area as the road remains closed in both directions.

Police are still at the scene and officials from Kent County Council are clearing a fuel spillage.
