Two men were rescued from the roof of a car after the vehicle became trapped in flood water last night.

The dramatic rescue took place in Romden Road, just outside Smarden, near Ashford, just after 5pm.

Four firefighters pulled on dry suits and used their specialist swift water rescue equipment to save the men, believed to be aged about 40.

This morning, a Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Motorists are asked not to attempt to drive through flooded roads or fords as the water is often deeper than it looks and may be moving quite fast."

An ambulance was called and paramedics checked the men over but they had no obvious injuries and were not taken to hospital.

The River Beult flows through the village of Smarden and passes under Romden Road.

Other areas of the Ashford borough also flooded following heavy rain yesterday morning, including parts of Kingsnorth.
