Drink-drive arrests

More than 20 motorists have been arrested in South Kent - which includes Ashford - in the first two weeks of the campaign by police to tackle drink-driving.

A total of 753 motorists have been breath tested and 128 arrested for positive readings or failing to provide a specimen throughout the county. There were 21 arrests in this area.

During the stop checks police are also ensuring people are wearing seatbelts and that drivers are not using hand-held mobiles.

Those found not wearing seatbelts will be issued with a £30 fixed penalty notice and drivers using a hand-held mobile will be subject to a £60 fine plus three penalty points on their licence, the fine rising to between £1,000 and £2,500 for drivers of buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles.
