An engineer who suffered severe burns in a trackside fire has been released from hospital.

The Network Rail employee was rushed to the William Harvey Hospital after a fire started in an electrical substation in Gasworks Lane, Ashford, just before Christmas.

He has been released from hospital but will receive ongoing treatment after sustaining serious burns to his arms and legs.

Network Rail declared the fire a "major incident" after it started at the Godinton substation, close to the Ashford International station.

Thousands of rail passengers were left stranded after the blaze caused a power surge and huge disruption to services.

Smoke from the fire forced the evacuation of a Network Rail signalling box, sparking delays to numerous services on December 20.

The air ambulance was called to the scene just after 9pm, but the engineer was taken to the William Harvey Hospital by road.

People living in the area were warned to keep doors and windows closed.
