The family of an Ashford man who suffered horrific injuries when his car was hit by a foreign lorry driving on the wrong side of the road has attacked the “inadequate” fine given to the driver.

A Czech lorry smashed into 34-year-old Neil Fowler’s car, leaving the father-of-two with “life-changing” injuries.

But the £330 fine given to the lorry driver by magistrates has been slammed as “nonsense” by Mr Fowler’s family.

Mr Fowler’s family, from Newtown, are campaigning for justice and tighter laws and restrictions on continental lorry drivers.

Last week his wife Joanna, who lives in Alfred Road, mother Lorraine Driver and other members of the family kept vigil at Maidstone hospital.

Mrs Driver, from Essella Road, a nurse who used to work in accident and emergency at the William Harvey hospital and is now practice nurse at Willesborough surgery, was convinced he would die.

She said: “The law is an ass to just fine him. There is no compensation and he still has his licence and is free to come back on our roads. Something must be done to stop this nonsense.”
