Firefighters spent 10 hours overnight at the scene of a massive straw fire.

A total of 175 tonnes were destroyed in the blaze at Jefferstone Lane, St Mary's Bay, Romney Marsh.

Firefighters were called out just before 9.40pm last night (Thursday) and worked through the night tackling the blaze and keeping it under control.

Four fire engines were initially called out and the presence was scaled down to one by the end of the operation just after 7.50am this morning.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "It was scaled down to two fire engines just before 11.30pm but crews had to spend a long time towards the end in a watching brief.

"Just before 5am one bail of straw remained and was allowed to burn under the control of a jet hose."

The fire was in open ground and did not reach any neighbouring houses.
