Tickets are still available for a group of classically trained gypsy-folk musicians, who are kicking off the new season of Revelation St Mary’s concerts in Ashford tomorrow.

Zum Roten Igel (ZRI) hope to free classical music from some of its stuffier confines.

Named after the Red Hedgehog Tavern where classical composer Brahms would go to hear gypsy musicians play in Vienna, their music is a melding of these two influences.

ZRI is Ben Harlan on clarinet, Max Baillie on violin, Jon Banks on accordion and Iris Pissaride on santouri and Matthew Sharp on cello.

Their performance, taking place on Saturday will blend Brahms’ much loved clarinet quintet with the feel of a tavern ensemble of its time.

ZRI will weave in gypsy and klezmer music to present a concert from a time when classical and folk came from the same place.

Tickets cost £14 in advance or £16 on the door. Concessions are available. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.45pm start.
