Burning petrol rolled down a hill in a dramatic car fire.

The fire on the Peugeot 106 broke out at Godinton Road, Ashford, with blazing petrol from the ruptured tank rolling five to six yards downhill.

Ashford Fire Station watch manager Kevin Surridge said: "The car was engulfed in flames and the tank had split, causing the petrol to roll down.

"We put out the flames with foam."

The fire happened just after 10am yesterday and 95 per cent of the car was wrecked by flames.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated but the damage to the tank is thought to have happened when the car was parked on a high kerb and came in contact with the stone. The flames running downhill had only reached a few inches in height.

One fire engine from Ashford was called and firefighters used breathing apparatus to put out the blaze.

Firefighters were at the scene for an hour and closed the road.
