A flood alert has been issued for parts of Kent - with residents warned to "be prepared".

The Environment Agency alert issued alert for the Upper River Stour says roads and low-lying land in and around Ashford could be flooded this afternoon following the weekend's heavy rain.

Officials say water levels in the area have risen following the recent downpours - with more showers forecast over the next day.

A spokesman for the body said: "We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Our incident response staff are out on the ground checking and clearing any blockages and debris from rivers.

"We are actively monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond if required."

The agency says areas along the Great Stour from Charing Heath to the A2070 including Ashford could be flooded.

Land near the East Stour, on the Whitewater and Ruckinge Dykes and Aylesford Stream are also at risk.

"Be prepared," the spokesman added.

"River levels have risen as a result of heavy rainfall.

"Flooding of roads and low lying land is expected 2pm today.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded."

Further rainfall is forecast through to 1am, with river levels expected to remain high until 10am tomorrow.
