A little girl from Ashford has had her hair cut for the first time in her life and is donating it to a charity which makes wigs for children suffering from cancer.

Summer Kerr, who is seven-and-a-half years old, decided to get her long blonde locks chopped after finding out about the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs to children suffering hair loss due to cancer treatment.

The Smeeth Primary School pupil said: "I'm getting my hair cut because there are ill people and when they have an operation their hair falls out so I'm going to make a wig.

"When I'm in the bath my hair is really annoying and I think it will be nice to have it short. I hope to raise loads of money because it's money they give to the people so they can buy their children hair."

Joined by her mum Angie and dad Gareth, the Beaver Lane family went to hairdressers Toni and Guy in the High Street for Summer's first visit to a salon.

Hairdresser Owen Brunning carefully cut about 10 inches off before carefully packaging it up to be sent to China where it will be turned into a wig.

Dad Gareth said: "She really likes the idea of getting it made into a wig. When she heard about this charity she thought it would be a really good idea."
