Former BBC South East Today anchorman Geoff Clark put his hunt for a new job to one side as he enjoyed watching a football match in Ashford on Saturday.

Mr Clark and co-presenter Beverley Thompson both suddenly left the Tunbridge Wells-based show last week.

The TV presenter sat alongside Ashford Town’s co-owner Don Crosbie in the directors box at Homelands to watch the home team beat Whyteleafe 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Nuts and Bolts fans may hope Mr Clark becomes a regular at the ground as his attendance inspired the home side to their first Ryman League Division 1 South win of the season and lifted them off the botom of the table.

Colleagues and many viewers were shocked earlier this year when it was announced the joint anchors of the BBC’s regional show were told they were being replaced by the younger pairing of Rob Smith and Polly Evans from the end of October.

Mr Clark presented his last show last Thursday while Beverley Thompson’s last show was the night before - weeks earlier than expected.

It is understood they both declined alternative roles offered to them by the BBC and were given the option of leaving the show before their contracts actually expired.

The BBC said the changes in presenting personnel were made in response to audience requests.
