Port Lympne Wild Animal Park has welcomed two tall new residents - a pair of giraffes.

The female Rothschild giraffes - named Lunar and Lehanna - have arrived at the park as part of a breeding programme, designed to boost the dwindling numbers of the long-necked creatures in the wild where, they are classed as an endangered species.

It is hoped that in time the two young females will be joined by a male companion.

Animal director Adrian Harland said: “We are delighted to be accepted as part of this breeding programme. There are so few Rothschild giraffes in the wild that programmes like this one are essential.

“I hope, with the arrival of the male Rothschild that we will soon have the patter of tiny hooves.”

The two new additions will be staying on the The African Experience at the zoo, which is looked after by The Aspinall Foundation.

Paul Beer, head of the rhino and giraffe section, said: “We will let the girls settle in to their new home and then visitors should be able to spot them exploring The African Experience and meeting the other residents.”
