Save the old college bid

The Ashford Society conservation group has written to the council urging it to reconsider approving plans to demolish the town's old college building.
Planners at Ashford council gave K College chiefs the go-ahead to demolish the old building on the corner of Elwick Road and Station Road as well as two mock-Tudor houses to build its new multi-million pound campus.
But in a letter to the council, Ashford Society says the building served as a hospital during the First World War and should be kept “for the sake of future generations”.
The letter adds: “This year’s Remembrance Day falls on 11/11/11, a unique number, and it will be the last time that Ashford can boast a First World War hospital in its rather forlorn town centre.
“It is possible that a few of our brave chaps who were nursed in the former tech college succumbed to their wounds and their names are among the 259 shown on the nearby war memorial.
“Are we really going to stand by and watch this landmark building be destroyed?”
Ashford council gave the green light for the college's £25 million replacement scheme in early October.
