A clothes shop with several stores in Kent has come under fire over "sexualised" clothes on sale for girls as young as eight.

Criticism has been aimed at fashion retailer Internacionale, which has branches in Ashford's County Square, Chatham High Street and Maidstone Chequers Centre.

The items under most scrutiny are skin-tight crop tops, which barely cover the top half and tops designed to give a plastic-effect look.

And now calls are being made for a crackdown on the clothes, part of the Sophie range for children aged eight to 15.

The tops, which typically cost £7.99, are either low-cut across the top and around the chest while others do not cover the stomach at all.

Justine Roberts, founder of parental internet forum Mumsnet, expressed concern in a national newspaper, saying children would feel the pressure to "dress up like pole-dancers".

Internacionale is yet to respond to a request for comment.
