An old age support group has been working tirelessly to curb social isolation and supply shortages among the self-isolating.
Age UK Ashford had to close its Farrow Court Centre due to the coronavirus outbreak on March 16, where the charity normally provides social sessions and food for the older generation.
That demographic, seen as being among the most at risk in society, are now being provided with a range of services by the charity.
About 60 hot meals are being delivered each day to those who need them, alongside shopping and prescriptions. Currently the group does 45 shopping runs a day, which it notes "can be very time consuming due to stock and queues in stores. Demand is growing daily."
Meanwhile, the team is running a telephone befriending service and giving out information and advice to its patrons.
This week, eight new introductions have been made through the befriending service across Ashford.
Louise Roberts, community engagement officer at the town's branch, said: "Age UK Ashford is committed to the wellbeing of older people in the Ashford borough and are working closely with our colleagues at Age UK Hythe and Lyminge who are also supporting older people.
"We encourage anyone who requires help with shopping, prescriptions, a hot meal or if they feel lonely to get in touch.
"We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from other local charities, businesses and members of the public who have contacted us to volunteer and assist.
"As the demand for our services grow, volunteers will make an incredible difference for older people at a time in their lives when they need help the most."
Ashford residents who need support, or know someone who does, should call them at 01233 668765 or email covid-19@ageukashford.org.uk.
Meanwhile, Age UK Hythe and Lyminge have also seen an uptake in requests for support but also in the offers of help from the public.
The service manager there, Hayley Ross, said: "Every morning I hear the thanks given to NHS staff who are doing an amazing job treating those that have been infected with COVID-19.
"My colleagues and I would like to personally thank them for their absolute dedication to support and treat those in need.
"I would like to make the public aware of those un-recognised staff and volunteers that do not work for the NHS, that are ensuring those identified as most vulnerable and self-isolating are supported.
"I can't speak for every charitable organisation in the county, however Age UK Hythe and Lyminge have had a huge response from volunteers in the local community - 94 in total which, along with our current staff and existing volunteers of 140, totals 234 people supporting those most vulnerable.
"During these difficult times I am proud to be part of our community, we have pulled together and reacted quickly to the challenges we face.
"Please take the time to thank these people, they are doing an absolutely outstanding and amazing job."
The team at Hythe and Lyminge are also offering their help to anyone who needs it, and can be contacted on 01303 296602.
