A driver was lucky to escape serious injury after his Range Rover left the road and ploughed into a river.

The incident, which also involved a black saloon car, happened on Mace Lane near Ashford town centre at 11.40am.

The 4x4 ploughed through railings next to the former Liquid nightclub, landing in the Great Stour.

The driver was stretchered from the river at about 1.30pm, half an hour before his vehicle was recovered.

He was taken to the William Harvey Hospital but did not suffer serious injuries.

The black saloon car avoided the water but sustained heavy front-end damage and was also removed by Ashford Recovery.

Two fire engines, two fire cars, three ambulances and three police cars were all called, as well as a fire service height vehicle.
