A huge B&M lorry has wiped out Christmas lights in Ashford town centre.

Police are at the scene in Bank Street after the red-faced driver took a wrong turn and ploughed into the festive bulbs.

B&M bosses are preparing to open their new town centre bargain store in the High Street at 9am tomorrow.

Historian Steve Salter photographed the drama this evening.

He said: "The driver took a wrong turn and went up Bank Street instead of going around the back of the store to deliver in Edinburgh Road.

"Because the lorry is so high he's taken the lights down with him - it's taken several rows down.

"He got as far as Kingsfords Solicitors before realising - the lights are now caught between his cab and the trailer."

Homeware giant B&M already has an out-of-town store on the Ashford Retail Park in Sevington, but will open in the town's former Woolworths store tomorrow.

Customers can expect toys, food and drink, health and beauty, homewares and a pet range.

The new store has created 40 jobs, and councillors hailed its arrival as a major vote of confidence in the town centre.
