Safety Net Kent League Hythe Town made history by reaching the first round of the FA Cup for the first time with an exceptional performance at home to Blue Square Bet South Staines on Saturday.
The first signs of an upset came when Hythe's Gary Mickelborough capitalised on a mistake by Marien Ifura. The striker rounded Louis Wells in the Staines goal and walked the ball into an empty net 10 minutes before half-time.
Scott Porter's side stubbornly refused to be intimidated by a side ranked more than 50 places above them in the non-league pyramid and their determination paid off mid-way through the second half. Dave Cook's bullet header from Mickelborough's cross found its way past Wells for 2-0.
Hythe's performance was marred by a red card for Lee Winfield, who picked up a second caution after he was judged to have kicked out at Scott Taylor in the closing stages.
Marc Charles-Smith rattled the post for Staines in the dying seconds but the home side held on for a deserved and memorable victory - becoming the first Kent League side to reach the first round of the FA Cup in more than 50 years.
They will find out on Sunday lunchtime who they face in the next round.
