A drunk dad who told his neighbour "it's a white man's world" before threatening to stab her claims he's not racist because his "step-brother is black".
Ryan White was holding a large kitchen knife when he glared at Simone Barclay through the window of her flat in Angus Drive, Kennington, in September last year.
The 30-year-old, who had knocked back half a bottle of Archers, delivered the terrifying threats after the pair clashed in a row about noise.
But White denied any wrongdoing, telling jurors he couldn’t have committed the crime because an injured hand would have prevented him being able to hold the weapon.
He also told Canterbury Crown Court “I don’t class myself as a racist person” because he has family members of different ethnicities, including a step-brother who is black, and three nephews of mixed race.
White argued under cross-examination that declaring “it’s a white man’s world” to Miss Barclay was not racist behaviour.
But the jury took just three hours and 20 minutes to unanimously convict him of placing his victim in racially aggravated fear of violence.
Prosecutor Ian Foinette told how Miss Barclay’s patience became frayed when White, his partner and another woman were smoking and drinking outside her window at 9.20pm on September 18.
“[Miss Barclay] was watching television, she had her windows open because the weather was hot, and she became aware of Mr White and two females smoking and drinking," he said.
“It seems they moved closer to her window and she asked them to be a little quieter than they were being.
“It seems one of the females became aggressive, and it seems it wasn’t the first time there were people outside the window.”
“Miss Barclay, having become irritated, told them [to go away] upstairs which, given the circumstance, probably wasn’t the wisest thing to do.”
Mr Foinette explained how a row erupted between White and Miss Barclay, during which he “stared at her which made her feel fearful”.
“He then said ‘black [women] like you always have something to say - it is a white man’s world'.
“He made various other comments, it seems, about black women, but said he wasn’t being racist.”
White declared he was going to stab Miss Barclay, “which, needless to say, left her petrified,” Mr Foinette said.
“She locked her door then saw the defendant leave his own front door close by carrying a large kitchen knife,” the prosecutor continued.
Police arrived shortly after Miss Barclay called 999 and went to White’s address in the same building.
The court heard he shouted they needed a warrant, but he was swiftly arrested.
During a police interview White, of Angus Drive, claimed the row was equally weighted and denied carrying a blade.
He was granted conditional bail and will be sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court at a later date.
