Retail giant John Lewis has been given the go-ahead to open a homeware store in Ashford.

Despite concerns about its effect on the town centre and objections from rival businesses, plans for the 5,390sq m outlet by Drovers Roundabout (like the John Lewis store pictured above) were approved last night (Wednesday).

Several members of Ashford Borough Council's planning committee said they disliked the "box-like" appearance of the proposed John Lewis at Home store, but felt its arrival would attract more visiting shoppers and other quality retailers to the town.

Cllr Clair Bell (Con) said: "I think it will be a catalyst for other multiples. It can only benefit the whole area."

Committee members voted unanimously in favour of approving the store, which will create 160 new jobs in the town.

After the meeting Ashford council leader, Cllr Peter Wood said: "We are delighted to welcome John Lewis at Home to Ashford.

"This is very exciting news. The new store will complement the town's existing retail offer while significantly enhancing the choices for shoppers in Ashford and whole of East Kent."

John Lewis at Home will sell furniture, white goods and other electrical products.
