It has been mixed news for Kent MPs as new Prime Minister Theresa May continues her cabinet reshuffle.

In the latest developments, Dover and Deal MP Charlie Elphicke has stepped down as a Government Whip, while Chatham & Aylesford MP Tracey Crouch remains Sports Minister.

Julian Brazier, who threw his support behind Andrea Leadsom in the Tory leadership campaign, has stepped down as Minister for Reserves at the MoD.

He said Mrs May's agenda is "something I shall be proud to support from the back benches."

Last week saw Ashford MP Damian Green appointed as the Minister for Work and Pensions in the new cabinet.

Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark has moved from his job as communities secretary, where he was driving the government's devolution agenda.

Mr Clark is now Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

In a statement he said: “I am thrilled to have been appointed to lead this new department charged with delivering a comprehensive industrial strategy, leading Government’s relationship with business, furthering our world-class science base, delivering affordable, clean energy and tackling climate change.”

Mr Green, who has been Ashford's Conservative MP since 1997, was widely tipped to win promotion. He was a key figure in Theresa May's campaign to become leader

Former Minister for Policing and Criminal Justice, Mr Green has also served as schools minister.

When asked yesterday whether he thought he would receive a cabinet position, Mr Green said: "I have been around politics too long to expect anything, I genuinely have no idea."

Theresa May announced the first new appointments of her Cabinet earlier last week, including Phillip Hammond the new Chancellor and Boris Johnson Foreign Secretary.

Sevenoaks MP Michael Fallon remains as Defence Secretary.
