Two major car parks were flooded following torrential rain.

Ashford’s Stour Centre car park turned into a lake, submerged in several inches of water, and neighbouring Civic Centre spaces were also struck.

The downpours had caused the Great Stour and East Stour rivers to break their banks, flooding access roads and parking spaces.

Ashford Borough Council spokesman Graham Clifford said: "Visitors are being warned to take precautions when visiting these car parks.

"Access to the Civic Centre and Stour Centre via Tannery Lane is closed to vehicles due to deep water in the road alongside the Civic Centre car park entrance."

Drivers visiting the two sites were advised to use the Station Road approach but were warned there were only limited spaces available.

The smaller car parking area immediately outside the rear entrance to the Civic Centre remains unusable.

Mr Clifford said: "The situation is being closely monitored and Tannery Lane will reopen when it is safe to do so.

"However with more heavy rain forecast it may be necessary to reinstate road closures if river levels rise again."
