Lisa Dobriskey beat world 1,500m champion Maryam Yusuf Jamal at the Rieti Grand Prix in Italy on Sunday.
Dobriskey finished second behind the Bahrain athlete at the world championship in Berlin last month.
But she went one better this time by winning the race in 4:01.23, 0.06 of a second ahead of her rival.
Jamal dipped her head at the finish in an attempt to get in front of the Ashford athlete but it was not enough.
The pair were well ahead of the rest of the field, with world bronze-medallist Shannon Rowbury, of the US, third in 4:03.46.
