Lisa Dobriskey wants to get rid of 'nearly' tag at World Athletics Championship

Lisa Dobriskey insists it’s high time she ditched her nearly-girl tag at the World Championships.

After enjoying an Aviva-funded preparation camp in Ulsan, two hours south of the championship venue, the Kent middle distance star will arrive in Daegu as the reigning world silver medallist in the 1500m.

However even in that high point two years ago in Berlin there was an all-too familiar caveat – the 27-year-old just missed gold by 0.1 of a second to winner Maryam Yusuf Jamal from Bahrain.

That so-close-but-yet-so-far reputation had begun with fourth in the Olympic final a year previously and was unfortunately kept up with an identical finish at the European Championships in Barcelona last year.

Hip and back troubles have threatened to derail her attempts to ditch her burgeoning nearly-girl moniker in recent weeks but with those problems under control the quiet Dobriskey is confident she can roar into the medals in Daegu.

“I feel now that I am very much in danger of getting into the position of almost becoming a nearly person who is almost there,” said Dobriskey.

“Fourth in the Olympics and then fourth last year at the Europeans as well as missing out on gold at the last worlds by 0.1 of a second.

“It’s always ‘oh you did well but you just missed out’ and it’s like my teammate Jenny Meadows says you need to step up to that level and deliver on the expectation.

“Hopefully I can make sure, with a good performance at the World Championships, that I can put that behind me.

“I would love to win another medal because I think when you set a standard for yourself like I did in Berlin then it is very important that you follow it up.

“I wasn’t able to do that last year in Barcelona and I felt really disappointed with myself because I felt like I had a good shot to win that race.”

Lisa Dobriskey has been selected for the Aviva GB&NI Team and is at an Aviva funded preparation camp in Ulsan, Korea. Aviva’s support, both at home and abroad, is helping the team prepare to compete at their best. To find out more, go to aviva.co.uk/athletics or follow us on Twitter @AvivaAthletics
