A truck driver is due to appear in court next month after a lorry crashed into an electricity substation, narrowly missing high-voltage equipment.
Police were called to Ashford’s Henwood Industrial Estate on Thursday, March 24, where they found a lorry stuck in the carpark at Right Track Music (RTM).
Su Bailey, director of RTM, said she was called back to the music studio she owns and runs at about 10.30pm by a worried musician who had spotted a lorry driver.
She said: “The first knowledge I had was a band member calling us saying there was a lorry in the car park.
“He had crashed into our security barrier when it was up and smashed into a fence. Luckily he just about missed the electricity substation itself, so that could have been much worse.
“It was a miracle that he missed it really. It could have been catastrophic.
“He maybe thought it was a through road but we are a dead end and our car park is very narrow. It’s hard to get round that car park in my old Passat Estate, never mind in an articulated lorry!
“The police were already there when we got back and they were escorting the driver away.”
But Mrs Bailey, who co-owns the Henwood Industrial Estate business with husband Chris, said the drama did not end there.
She said: “They bailed him on March 26, but he just came straight back to his lorry and stayed there.
“I rang the police to get him moved, because we couldn’t use our car park but they said it was a civil matter and ‘wasn’t life or death!’
“We just left him to sleep in the lorry, what else could we do?
“Two officers eventually turned up on Tuesday and he was escorted away but we hadn’t been able to use the car park for six days.”
Istavan Deak, 48, was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.
He appeared before Dover Magistrates Court accused of driving a lorry in Javelin Way with 73 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.
The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.
He is due to appear again before magistrates in Folkestone on Monday, May 16.
