A man has died following a serious lorry crash on the M20.

The accident took place on the London-bound carriageway between junctions 11 for Hythe and 10 for Ashford at around 12.30pm yesterday.

Police say a lorry left the carriageway and overturned. No other cars are believed to have been involved.

The air ambulance was dispatched and the coast-bound carriageway was closed so it could land. Fire and ambulance services were also called to the motorway.

The driver of the lorry, a 60-year-old man from Poland, was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital by road "in a life-threatening condition".

He later died. His next of kin has been informed.

There were major delays in the area until 9.30pm, when the carriageway fully re-opened.

Police are now investigating the accident, and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Chris Wade said: "There were a number of motorists on this busy stretch of the M20 so we are hopeful that there will be witnesses who can come forward and assist us.

"We are grateful for the patience and co-operation from the majority of drivers whilst we carried out our work, but it was necessary to fine two drivers for obstructing the hard shoulder.

"I would like to remind motorists of the importance of keeping the hard shoulder clear so emergency services can operate safely and our access to incidents is not obstructed."
