A motorway has reopened after more than 24 hours following a crash which saw 200 litres of diesel spill across the road.

The driver of a car was taken to hospital after the collision involving a lorry between Junction 10A for Ashford South and Junction 11 for Hythe in the early hours of yesterday.

About 200 litres of diesel was spilled onto the coastbound carriageway and the road had to be resurfaced before it could reopen.

Work finished about 4.30am today and all lanes are now open.

Emergency services including police were called to the crash.

Three fire engines attended and crews made the scene safe and helped to clear the fuel before leaving at 2.17am.

Paramedics were called and the driver of the car was taken to hospital although the extent of their injuries is unknown.

Some drivers were caught within the closure for almost three hours, but traffic was eventually released.

It is understood the hard shoulder and both lanes were resurfaced overnight.

National Highways has thanked people for their patience.

A diversion was in place via Junction 10 the A20 coast bound towards Folkestone, before rejoining the motorway at Junction 11.
