A man is in a critical condition in hospital after an assault in Ashford town centre in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The assault happened in an alley which runs between the lower High Street to the car park behind the bingo hall at 2.39am.

The victim was taken to William Harvey Hospital with potentially life-threatening head injuries, and is due to be transferred to a London hospital.

A 21-year-old local man has been arrested and is in police custody.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
