A man has died after being hit by a van on the hard shoulder of the M20.

The victim had got out of his blue Kia Carens on the coastbound stretch between Junction 8 for Leeds Castle and Junction 9 for Ashford.

Police say he was then struck by an Iveco box van at 10.20pm on Friday.

The 71-year-old died at the scene and his next of kin have been informed.

A female passenger who had also been travelling in the Kia received minor injuries.

Police say the driver of the van is assisting officers with their inquiries.

The serious collision investigation unit is investigating and is urging anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.
