Ashford mayor Cllr John Holland hopes to realise a long-held ambition by holding his charity ball on April 23 next year to mark St George’s Day.
He told fellow councillors at a recent council meeting: “I very much appreciate the way that the Scots celebrate Burns Night and I would like to feel that within the borough we could start to celebrate St George’s Day.”
Cllr Holland also announced the 90th anniversary of the arrival of a commemorative tank in Ashford town centre is to be marked with a parade on August 1.
He explained that the town’s Territorial Army soldiers, who were given the freedom of the borough on May 7, would be joined by the town’s veterans and an element of the Gurkhas in a march at the event.
He said: “I would like to feel that all the members of the council would support the event and we invite the general community to come along and appreciate the armed forces on the day.”
