Spelling mistake spotted on new road signs for Little Olantigh Road in Wye, near Ashford

Council bosses have been left red-faced after villagers spotted a "mildly amusing" spelling mistake on two new road signs.

Residents in Wye, near Ashford, noticed the error in Little Olantigh Road after new signs were installed at either end of the country lane.

The gaffe, which sees Olantigh written as Olangtigh, was first spotted by Rev Ravi Holy, who is in charge of the United Wye Benefice.

“It is quite a strange word and no one in Wye pronounces it the same,” Rev Holy explained.

“It is pronounced ‘Ollanty’. I’m not surprised they got the spelling wrong, but it seems like a fairly basic error.

“There is already an Olantigh Road, so you would have thought they would have looked at the other one to check the spelling before.

“I’m not sure when they changed it, but I walk my dog up there and as we went past, I saw there was a new sign.

“I was 99.9% certain it was wrong but I had to check.

“I thought it was mildly amusing but it does need to be sorted out.”

The signs will be replaced by Ashford Borough Council (ABC).

A council spokesperson said: “We have been made aware of the error and the sign will be replaced.”

This is not the first time a spelling error has appeared on a sign in Ashford.

A huge sign erected at the new traffic-light controlled junction from Waterbrook Avenue in Ashford mistakenly labelled the area of Newtown as Newton.

A former councillor described the error as an “embarrassment” and an "unprofessional mistake" given the amount of disruption the roadworks have caused.
