A mother has complained about a "misleading" letter which she says did not make it clear that her daughter had failed her 11-plus.

Karel Bailey received a letter saying 10-year-old Georgia Bailey had been “assessed as suitable for admission to a high school”.

The letter does not mention passing or failing the Kent Grammar School Assessment Test.

Mrs Bailey said it was so unclear that she and her husband Mark had at first thought that Georgia had passed and was eligible for grammar school.

Mrs Bailey, 42, of Viburnum Close, Godinton Park, Ashford, said: “For two to three hours we were elated but on further inquiries we realised she had failed.

“It was like being given a Christmas present and having it snatched back. We have spoken to other parents who have received these letters and they have also found it confusing.”

The Baileys confirmed through Georgia’s primary school, Godinton, that she had in fact failed.

Mrs Bailey said: “We would rather the letter had just said that.

“There was no pressure on Georgia. She gave the exam her best shot and her score showed she was not far from passing.”

Kent County Council spokesman Ian Tucker said: “We are concerned that there was a misunderstanding with the letter and have spoken with Mrs Bailey.

"As there is selective education in Kent, the secondary schools admission brochure defines every school as grammar, high or an academy. We are happy to consider reviewing the wording of the letters to parents.”
