The M20 has reopened following a serious crash when a car went into the central reservation.
Motorists said they saw a helicopter landing on the carriageway between Hythe and Ashford in the London-bound direction.
All three lanes were closed with tailbacks for several miles as the air ambulance arrived at the scene.
One driver said they had been queuing for more than 20 minutes about 500 metres away from the accident between junctions 11 and 10 at 2.10pm.
Traffic was also being held on the coast-bound side to allow the air ambulance to land and take off.
Police said the crash was "a serious incident".
A spokesman said: "Following a report a car had collided with the central reservation at 2.09pm, officers and paramedics were called to the scene on the Londonbound side of the M20 between Junctions 11 and 10.
"Both lanes were closed for recovery but have now reopened.
"Drivers are warned there may still be delays in the area."
Highways England earlier advised drivers that the road could remain closed until 5.30pm but the closure was lifted at around 3.30pm.
The M20 exit sliproad at junction 11 on the Londonbound carriageway was also busy.
Police said a diversion was in place via the A20 through Sellindge but had a knock-on effect on local traffic.
Highways England also warned travellers from Eurotunnel and ferry passengers from Dover to expect delays while rail replacement buses between Dover and Ashford were diverted.
