It comes after the death of charity volunteer Dani Tuohy, 25, who fell from the bridge on the M20 last month.

Kennington Community Council has launched a campaign to raise the height of the barriers and is also calling for improvements to bring the structure up to more modern standards.

They are being backed by Mr Joseph, who says he is working with National Highways to bring the proposals forward.

“I am in full support of changing the height of the barriers,” the MP said.

“I have raised the issue with National Highways and written to the Department for Transport to see what measures can be taken to raise the height as soon as possible.

“The safety and wellbeing of my constituents is at the forefront of my work as their MP.

“My thoughts are with the woman who has passed away after falling from the bridge and her loved ones at what must be an incredibly difficult time for them.”

A National Highways spokesperson said work will take place once they have the necessary funding.

“Ensuring safety on our network is a top priority and we are exploring how we can increase the height of the parapets at this bridge,” they said.

“We are committed to progressing this once funding becomes available.

“We recognise residents’ concerns and are working proactively with Kent County Council, Ashford Borough Council and Samaritans to address immediate issues and explore safety measures.”

The community council has also asked Mr Joseph to urge the transport secretary to consider amendments to the national standards for bridge building across motorways and dual carriageways.
