A Kent MP has slammed Gary Lineker for his controversial tweets calling them "foolish and offensive".
The Match of the Day presenter sparked chaos within the BBC after criticising the Government's new bid to stop small boats crossing the Channel, saying it was "an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s.”
After the BBC prevented him fronting last night's Match of the Day, numerous BBC Sport colleagues supported him by refusing to work. If left viewers of the show watching 20 minutes of Premier League highlights, with no opening credits, no pundits and even no commentary.
Now Damian Green, the Conservative MP for Ashford, says the former England star was out of order.
Speaking on GB News this morning, the politican said: "Anyone who starts invoking the Nazis and comparing democratic politicians of any kind to them, doesn't have much of an argument.
"The wording of that now notorious tweet was pretty foolish and offensive. [Home Secretary] Suella Braverman's husband is Jewish so she has family members killed by the Nazis so people shouldn't use that kind of language freely or easily."
Shying away from saying whether he thought the football presenter should be sacked, he added: "I find it completely extraordinary in the week where had this hugely important immigration bill, the best summit a British Prime Minister has had with the French since Brexit, where we have the PM flying out to America for a hugely important defence deal and have the Budget on Wednesday, what we're all obsessed with are Gary Lineker's tweets.
"I think we'll all look back and remember that mad weekend when the only thing anyone cared about was Gary Lineker and if there were commentators on Match of the Day - that was a bit weird wasn't it?"
Damian Green was recently rejected as the Tory candidate for the new Weald of Kent seat at the next general election although is believed to be putting his name forward for the Ashford seat.
Lineker is understood to be holding talks with senior figures within the BBC tomorrow as to his future.
