A couple who have come forward to save Ashford’s beleaguered carnival are urging the town’s residents, organisations and representatives to lend a hand as time ticks on for the July 12 event.

Mike and Amanda Chappell stepped in with two months after a lengthy search for replacements for long-time organisers Terry and Brenda Dickinson who stepped down.

Mr Chappell said: "For a place the size of Ashford not to have a parade would be a shame.

"It’s about putting something back into the community."

The Chappells have long been involved in that community, especially Singleton, where they are leading lights in the Kent Giant Association, which takes giant models to various events around the country to promote those areas that could do with a boost to highlight their identity.

Mr Chappell said: "We have just returned from a Hastings festival that attracts about 50,000 people and we are going to Chester next month."

With only two months to go to the big day, Mr Chappell is eager to attract any help he can.

He said: "We have minimal funds, just not enough money. We need friends, we need sponsorship.

"Next year we will have more time and I hope, it will be much bigger event."
