A new guide listing Tenterden’s many historical sights is now available.
The free heritage trail leaflet is Tenterden Improved’s latest project to boost tourism and interest in the town and has been put together by the local history society and in particular, historian Dr Jack Gillett.
It details Tenterden’s origins, intriguing architecture and 18 fascinating and prominent buildings, with a map listing their locations.
Peter Davies of Tenterden Improved said: “The pamphlet, in full colour, provides a graphic bird’s eye view of the centre of the town.
“It steers visitors and residents around well known parts of the High Street and less familiar lanes and uncovers some of their hidden and occasionally darker pasts.
“Short historic items include mathematical tiles and royal connections with the town.
“They are extensive illustrations, including historic photographs supplied by the town museum.”
The leaflet answers such intriguing questions as W
whose army is said to have marched through St Michaels more than 900 years ago? Why did Henry VIII visit the town in 1538? And what connection had the future Edward II have with Manor Row?
Tenterden Heritage Trail is available from the town’s museum and at the Gateway centre.
