An internationally renowned artist known for his ‘graffiti spaghetti’ designs has created what is believed to be one of the world’s longest illustrations.

The artist, who has more than 3.2 million followers on Instagram and whose real name is Sam Cox, has created the 203-metre doodle at the junction of Avenue Jacques Faucheux and Beaver Road.

The site, which is opposite Ashford International and the Hampton by Hilton hotel, has been earmarked for the tallest building ever planned for the borough, the Infinity residential apartments.

The scheme had previously been described as the ‘Ashford Shard’ as it is set to cover 16 storeys.

The plans were approved in November 2022, but work is yet to begin.

Having painted the black hoardings around the plot on Friday, Mr Doodle had only asked Ashford Borough Council (ABC) if it could help with a site to add to his existing works the day before.

The authority's arts and cultural industries manager, Chris Dixon, said: "Mr Doodle was eager to work on the Infinity site hoardings, which is owned by our commercial housing arm, A Better Choice for Property, and it was happy to give permission.

"The following day Mr Doodle hit the ground running at 8am and remarkably completed the work in just one day. It looks fantastic.”

Meanwhile, ABC chief executive Tracey Kerly added: “It's already created lots of interest and it's been lovely to see lots of selfies of passers-by on social media.

"It’s worth pointing out that this amazing public artwork has been delivered at absolutely no cost to the council.

"Mr Doodle is a huge fan of Ashford and did all this off his own back. He even repaired bits of the hoarding which needed it.

“He has told us he had so many nice and positive comments on the day and I think people will really enjoy the piece and how it’s brightened up this prominent and busy road junction in Ashford.”

It is not the first time the artist has seen his work displayed across the borough.

In the summer, he helped leave a mark for Kent and East Sussex Railway's 50th anniversary when he turned a carriage into a canvas.

And in 2022, he covered his 12-room mansion in St Michaels in black and white doodles.

He has also taken part in previous initiatives set up by ABC such as decorating a Snowdog in the art trail in 2018 which raised £142,000 for Pilgrims Hospice.

A Better Choice for Property is behind the Infinity development, which it has named in honour of mathematician John Wallis, who was born and raised in Ashford.
