Workers have started painting double yellow lines on 19 Ashford roads in a bid to end parking chaos.
Restrictions outside the Waitrose supermarket at Repton Park are the first stage of the Godinton Ward Order 2014, which will see “no waiting” restrictions introduced in parking problem hotspots in and around the same area of town.
The new yellow lines in Sir Bernard Paget Avenue have been well received by Waitrose, which originally backed the plans as its lorries struggled to manoeuvre around parked vehicles.
Karen Jeffrey, department manager at the store, said: “The overall reaction from our customers is so positive.
“We have had lots of compliments and they feel the restrictions are definitely in our favour.
“Cars were parking all down both sides of the branch so when you were trying to enter or exit the building the view was restricted and it was really dangerous.
“Our customers were very unhappy about it. I would hear from numerous people a few times a week that it was an accident waiting to happen.
“I think the council really have done a good job. The whole road is completely clear now.
“It feels much safer and our customers really appreciate it.”
The scheme includes further restrictions around the Cobbs Wood industrial estate and the Godinton Park and Repton Park housing estates.
Work on painting these yellow lines are expected to begin shortly.
