Environment Agency confirms cause of pink stream in Kennington, Ashford

A stream which turned bright pink was caused by a one-off event from an algal bloom, it has been revealed.

Residents were left baffled last Friday when the waterway in Kennington, Ashford, became the shocking shade.

Some feared pollution but the Environment Agency has now confirmed it was down to a natural occurrence.

A spokesman for the government body: “There was no notable environmental harm from this incident in the stream and the colour was back to normal the following day.

“Evidence suggests this is a one-off event most likely caused by an algal bloom from a connected pond.“

Speaking last week, Steve Williams, who lives near the stream, said it looked like dye had been poured into the water.

He said: ”I’ve no idea what has caused this.

“It looks like someone has thrown in red dye and it has gone pink by being diluted.”

Some people discussing the scene on the Kennington Forum Facebook page initially thought it might be contamination from dumped paint.

Others were amused by the sight.

“Strawberry custard,” one said.

Another quipped: “Alas someone has killed Mr Blobby,” referring to the garishly pink TV character.

A third commentator said: “Does this lead to Willy Wonka land?”

The Environment Agency says that in general if people suspect incidents of pollution they should phone its free 24-hour incident hotline on 0800 807060.
